Lilac Tournament! Click here for new pictures from Hot Dog Night 2002! Sports Corner Week 7 Cornerstone entered the Lititz Lilac softball tournament for the second straight year. Last season we fished in second place losing to Lancaster Evangelical Free Church. This season Cornerstone would not be denied. Our first game was against a strong Lititz Moravian team in which we saw a couple of familiar faces named Bob and Malt Bomberger. Cornerstone came out swinging scoring 5 runs in the first. Our leadoff hitter Darryl Miller went 4 for 4 including 2 doubles and a triple. Carl Killinger went 3 for 3 and knocked in 4 runs. Steven Small added the power be1ting 2 home runs. Paul Phenicie also collected 3 hits as Cornerstone downed the Moravians 15-8. Next up was Trinity Evangelical. At the end of3 innings we were down 4-1. That's when the bats woke up. Cornerstone scored 5 in the 4th and never looked back. Steven Small again homered his 3rd of the tournament. Darryl Miller and Jeff Porter also hit the big fly. Final score was Cornerstone 11, Trinity 7. Our 3rd game saw a great defensive team, which held us to only 4 runs. St. Paul's Lutheran held us to just 10 hits and beat us 8-4 on a very hot and humid night. Since this is a double elimination tournament, we had to play one more that evening. St. Paul's won the coin toss and momentum shifted to them. Cornerstone answered the challenge scoring 5 runs in the 1st inning. Jim Woodring, Steven Small, Paul Phenicie and Nelson Yoder all had rbi hits in the inning. The score was tied at the end of 7 innings at 6 apiece. After a scoreless 8th, Cornerstone connected for 3 runs in the 9th as Jim Woodring singled in 2 runs and brother George knocked in one. The game wasn't over yet though as St. Paul's had one more at bat left. They fought hard and scored 2 runs, just 1 run short. The tournament finally ended at 10: 15 at night. A lot of sweat, bruises, and aching backs but Cornerstone finally won the big one. Sports Corner Week 6 Cornerstone was rained out Tuesday night and will reschedule the game in July. Thursday night Cornerstone had a good turnout for ice cream and hot dogs, but we fell 22-17 in a real slugfest. Rick Bertou had a good game going 3 for 4 with a double. Bob Bomberger continued his hitting ways going 4 for 4 with a double, triple and a homerun. Dennis Shaeffer also homered for Cornerstone. Nelson Yoder had his best offensive game getting 3 hits.Next week Cornerstone will be in the Lititz Lilac Tournament. We will play our first game at 6:30 Tuesday night. If Cornerstone wins, we play again on Thursday night at 6:30 also. Should Cornerstone lose on Tuesday, we will play on Wednesday at 7:30 in the 2nd chance bracket. Games will be played at the Ambucs field behind Lititz Springs Park. The schedule is also in the Lititz Record. Sports Corner Week 5 Cornerstone had a good week, beating Salem on Tuesday and Hempfield United Methodist on Thursday. Ice cream night was cancelled due to inclement weather Thursday night. We will have ice cream though this coming Thursday night along with hot dogs and fun. So come on out and enjoy. Besides. it's free! On Tuesday, Cornerstone edged Salem 9-8. Bob Bomberger led the way going 2 for 3 with 2 triples and knocking in 3 runs. Matt Bomberger also homered and drive in 2. Nelson Yoder played a great game at 3rd base preventing Salem from scoring. Steven Small homered and knocked in 4 runs. Paul Phenicie also had 3 hits and knocked in 2 runs. Sports Corner Week 4 Cornerstone got back in the right track this past Tuesday with a 22-16 win over Hempfield United Methodist. With many faces missing, Cornerstone got back some old faces that have been out with different injuries. Jim Woodring returned and singled in two runs. It was his first game back, and his knee and ankle held up just fine. Jeff Porter also returned from a shoulder injury and had a great game going 2 for 4, scoring 3 runs and also drawing a walk. Another returnee was Nazario Sornoza (Nacho). He returned from a broken ankle from last year. Hopefully and God willing, we'll have Nevin Mumma back for next season. Bill Worthington also had a good game going 4 for 4 and knocking in 4 runs. Sports Corner Week 3 Cornerstone has hit a rough part of the road losing their last four games. Not only are we losing, but the players are also getting beaten up. Bill Worthington collapsed at the end of one game. Dennis Shaeffer took a shot in the head with the ball that reflected off Steven Small's glove. Dennis had to leave the game with swelling the size of a golf ball. Spencer Schemel also get hit in the chin with a batted bal, just a bruise and a small cut though. Game 4 was close, but Wayside held on to beat us 19-17. Daryl Miller led the way going 3 for 3 plus two walks and scoring five runs. Bob Bomberger and Paul Phenicie also had three hits a piece. Game 5 was a disaster. Missing some key players, Cornerstone lost 27-5 to Manor Brethren in Christ, a new team in our league this year. The only highlight in this game was Michael Eshbach going 3 for 3 and Bob Bomberger knocking in 3 runs. Game 6 saw Cornerstone lose to Apostles 15-1. Bob Bomberger had the only hit for Cornerstone. Bob tripled in the second inning to knock in the lone run. Game 7 saw Cornerstone lose to Highland 18-6. The highlight of this game was Matt Bombnerger's 3 run homer in the first inning. Cornerstone will rebound and come back this coming week. Carl Killinger is having a solid season leading the team in hits, runs, doubles and at bats. Sports Corner Week 2 This week Cornerstone played two games. Tuesday didn't fare too well as Lancaster Brethren (the defending champs) beat us 17-10. Steven Small rejoined the team as he finished his first year of college. Steven gained 20 pounds, and he showed it by belting a homerun and hitting a triple. Carl Killinger also had a good game with three hits including a pair of doubles. Bill Worthington also homered in the losing cause. Thursday night Cornerstone played perennial powerhouse Zion Lutheran. At the end of four innings Zion led 9-3. Then Cornerstone took control and scored 10 runs in the 5th inning. Pastor Arnold started the inning with a single and the team batted around, and Pastor Arnold added another single to drive in run number 9 in the inning. Matt Bomberger hit a grand slam in the inning. George Woodring went 5 for 5, Matt added another homer and his dad Bob homered. Cornerstone pounded out 27 hits for the game. Final score - Cornerstone 16, Zion 15. Sports Corner Week 1 The 2002 Softball Season is underway. There are a lot of new faces on the team due to many injuries to Cornerstone players. Nevin Mumma, Jeff Porter, Jim Woodring and Nazario Sornoza are all out with different ailments. However, Paul Phenicie returns to the team along with several new faces. The season started Tuesday May 7 on a winning note. Cornerstone clobbered First Baptist 19-6 at Wayside field. Leading the way for Cornerstone was Bob Bomberger who homered, tripled, scored three runs and knocked in six. George Woodring also collected four hits, scored four runs and knocked in three.
